The title Winterreise refers to a song cycle by Franz Schubert from 1827, a setting of 24 romantic poems by Wilhelm Müller. It narrates the wandering of a young man with a broken heart. His world has fallen to pieces and everything is upside down. Straying in the cold of a winters’ landscape, he can find neither shelter nor rest.
