German soprano Charlotte “Lotte” Lehmann was born in Perleberg, Province of Brandenburg, on 27 February 1888. She studied in Berlin and made her debut at the Hamburg Opera in 1910, joining the Vienna Court Opera (later Vienna State Opera) in 1914. She emigrated to the USA in 1938 and sang at the San Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan Opera until 1945. In addition to her work in opera, Lehmann was a renowned Lieder singer. She was also a prolific author as well as an active painter, including this series of Winterreise illustrations. Lotte Lehmann died in Santa Barbara, California on 26 August 1976.
